Arena Forum: Civil Dialogues

You are invited to participate in a new series of civil dialogues, launched by Arena Stage.

These dialogues seek to provide an opportunity for members of the Washington, DC metropolitan community to engage in discourse about major current issues. They also seek to demonstrate that people of very diverse viewpoints can have fruitful dialogues with one another. We hence assume that all participants have consented to heed the rules of civil dialogue, such as not attributing motives, not demonizing the other side, and showing that they truly listen to the other. There will be a few dialogue starters but most of the time will be dedicated to give and take among the participants. The dialogues will be moderated by Amitai Etzioni.

Monday, March 26 – Exploring the thesis that surveillance is excessive and privacy is endangered both by the government and by private corporations

Monday, April 23 – Exploring what we owe other people

Tuesday, May 29 – Exploring the future of race relations in America

Located in the Arlene and Robert Kogod Cradle
at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater
from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.

There will be a pre-dialogue reception before each event, starting at 5:30 p.m. in the Grand Lobby. Because of space limitations, registration is required but attendance is free and open to the public and press.

Exploring what we owe other people

These dialogues seek to provide an opportunity for members of the Washington, DC metropolitan community to engage in discourse about major current issues. There will be a few dialogue starters (names to be announced) but most of the time will be dedicated to give and take among the participants. The dialogues will be moderated by Amitai Etzioni.

Panelists for April 23 include:

Wai Wai Nu, peacebuilder, human rights activist, and women's rights activist from Myanmar who will discuss the plight of the Rohingya population

John Bellinger III, Council on Foreign Relations and Arnold & Porter LLP (former legal advisor for the U.S. Department of State under Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice)

Esther Brimmer, Executive Director and CEO of NAFSA (former Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs)

Elisa Massimino, President and CEO of Human Rights First

Christopher Preble, Vice president for defense and foreign policy studies, Cato Institute
